The Puritan first appeared in the 1902 The Cocktail Book a Sideboard Manual for Gentlemen by R.L.Paget. The book was considered the ultimate handbook for a valet looking to make excellent drinks for the Bright Young Things of London.
Made with gin, dry vermouth, yellow chartreuse and bitters, the Puritan is going to be a regular on my cocktail list from now on. The chartreuse lifts the whole drink to create a wonderfully fresh and crisp martini.
Ingredients for a Puritan
50ml gin
15ml dry vermouth
7.5ml yellow chartreuse
dash of bitters
Method
Shake all in the ingredients together and then double-strain into a chilled glass.
Enjoy!
