Three Cuts Gin Distiller’s Release from Turner Stillhouse in Tasmania, was one of a handful of Australian gins to receive a Gold Medal from the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London this year.
Turner Stillhouse was founded by Justin Turner, a Californian who relocated to Tasmania with his wife. He grew up on his family’s winery (where they also produced spirits), but initially took the path to corporate life in New York.

Three and half years ago, he began training as a distiller, gaining experience in the US, and then completing his education in Scotland.

Justin opened the Distillery with three gins; Founder’s Release, Distiller’s Release (made with co-distiller Brendan Coulson) and Barrel-Rested (made with Founder’s Release gin). The name Three Cuts refers to the three types of roses used in each gin.
I tasted all three, which I enjoyed, but the standout for me was The Distiller’s Release.
Tasting Three Cuts Gin Distiller’s Release
Distiller’s Release has a grape spirit base and the following botanical recipe; organic juniper, coriander, green cardamom, fresh Tasmanian lime, lemon and three types of rose that grown near the distillery.
Rose can be a challenge to work with, so I asked Justin how they achieved the delicate flavours. He kindly talked me through the intriguing process, but I can’t reveal it here – trade secrets and all that!
Distiller’s Release is very aromatic and I could pick out juniper, cardamom and a hint of white pepper. At first sip, it’s spicy, but as the gin develops the beautiful, rose flavours emerge. Those delicate notes filled my mouth and made it water. The gin then rolled on to a lengthy, herbaceous finish. Distiller’s Release is well made and perfectly balanced. The IWSC Gold Medal is much deserved.
Drinking Three Cuts Gin Distiller’s Release
I enjoyed Distiller’s release in a classic g&t, but soda works beautifully, really bringing out those rose flavours.

It made a delightful Aviation, and I look forward to trying it in a martini, perhaps subbing out vermouth for Lillet Blanc.
We are proudly stocking Turner Stillhouse Three Cuts Distiller’s Release in The Ginporium.
