A few readers have been asking for some classic gin cocktail recipes to try at home. A gin sour is probably the best (and one of the easiest) places to start. If you’ve been following the blog for a while you’ll notice that I’ve featured Gin Sours under various guises, like the Elderflower Gin Sour and White Lady.
Sours pre-date Prohibition and are described in Jerry Thomas’ 1862 book How to Mix Drinks and are made up of a base spirit (in this case gin), lemon or lime juice and a sweetener (Margaritas and Sidecars are also members of the sour family). Back in Jerry’s day the gin was Old Tom, but I’m using London Dry.
Ingredients for a Gin Sour
60ml London Dry gin
20ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
20ml simple syrup
1/2 fresh egg white
3 dashes of Angoustura bitters
cherry and a slice of lemon for garnish
Shake all of the ingredients together in an ice-filled shaker until chilled thoroughly. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice and garnish with the cherry and lemon.
