The Gin and Basil Smash was the first drink I tried at Webb & Co, a fantastic bar in Bathurst that I visited while on a trip to Stone Pine Distillery. It was originally created in 2008 by Jörn Meyer at Bar Le Lion in Hamburg and is now firmly established as a classic gin cocktail.
Using herbs in cocktails, adds a fresh, savoury dimension that lifts the whole drink. If, like me, you love the smell of basil, you’ll enjoy this one!
I’ve used Stone Pine Gin as did Webb & Co. I like the citrus notes from the native finger limes and think it works really well, but obviously you can experiment with whatever you have!
Ingredients for the Gin Basil Smash
50ml Stone Pine Dry Gin
25ml freshly squeezed lime juice
12.5ml simple syrup (sugar syrup)
8 torn basil leaves (plus some for garnish)
Add the basil to an empty cocktail shaker and using the base of a wooden spoon (or a muddle stick if you have one) press the leaves a few times and ‘muddle’ them together.
Add the gin, lime juice and simple syrup before filling cocktail shaker with ice.
Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is cold.
Strain into an ice-filled glass.
Garnish with a couple of basil leaves.
