Sloe gin lends itself to mulling and the weather in Melbourne this week gave me the perfect excuse (like I needed one) to do some Mulled Sloe Gin recipe testing.
There are lots of recipes out there, but this one was shared by Jared Brown of Sipsmith on his visit to Melbourne this week (more on than later). I like the fact that the sloe gin is added after you’ve warmed the rest of the ingredients so you don’t ruin the flavour of the sloe gin itself.
It’s very easy to make and could be made as a large batch for friends. (I made a single glass for me and it was fine). Feel free to fiddle with the proportions or try different spices, really anything goes!
Ingredients (makes one)
Cloudy apple juice
Water
Orange peel /slice to garnish
One Cinnamon stick
3 Cloves
1/4 Allspice powder
3 cardamom pods
Sloe Gin (25-45ml per person depending on how much you like your guest)
Method
Put apple juice, water, orange peel and spices into a pan and simmer for 20 minutes.
Carefully pour the warmed ingredients into a glass and then add the sloe gin. Stir a couple of times to make are the sloe gin is mixed through and then add your garnish.
Warming my hands around a glass of this deliciousness while the hail beat down on the roof ~ bliss.
