The Last Word

The Last Word is a prohibition-era cocktail that is enjoying renewed popularity after being championed by Murray Stenson of the Zig Zag cafe in Seattle.

I enjoyed my first Last Word at Lui Bar in Melbourne after Geoff (the head bartender) told me it was his favourite gin cocktail. The ingredients sounded a little off to me at first : gin, Maraschino liqueur, Chartreuse and freshly pressed lime juice. I could not imagine how these would combine to create anything palatable, but they really do!

Fresh, sweet, sour and pungent, The Last Word is a perfect palate cleanser or aperitif and a delicious alternative for those who prefer their cocktails on the dry side.

Readers ask for simple cocktail recipes, so I know some might balk at 3 different spirits, but I promise it’s worth the investment.

Ingredients for The Last Word

25ml Sipsmith Gin

25ml Maraschino Liqueur

25ml Chartreuse

25ml freshly pressed lime juice

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake vigorously until cold.

Strain contents on the cocktail shaker into a chilled glass.

  1. This looks like a cocktail I would love…!

  2. In a moment of indecision I said I’d make the first cocktail on your site I see. This was it…..The Last Word. It’s not bad considering I’m not a big chartreuse fan. It’s not going to replace the aviation but the lemon and luxardo work well together. Would I make it again? Yes.

    1. Oh Judy, I’m thrilled! And I know exactly what you mean, I was completely prepared to hate it, but was pleasantly surprised!
