The sun came out at the weekend and while summer is a way off, I was in the mood for something refreshing and fruity to drink. I came across the Strawberry & Basil Gin Smash.
Herbs work well in cocktails and basil works particularly well with strawberries. (Check out this recipe for a strawberry and basil dessert). There are several different versions of this cocktail out there (including one from Jamie Oliver) but I had a play around and adjusted the quantities to suit my taste (not too sweet).
Ingredients for the Strawberry & Basil Gin Smash
50ml gin
3 fresh strawberries plus one for garnish
15ml simple syrup
2 lemon wedges
2 fresh basil leaves plus one or two for garnish
Method for the Strawberry & Basil Gin Smash
Add the simple syrup, strawberries, lemon wedges and basil to an empty cocktail shaker. Muddle together. If you don’t have a muddler the bottom of a wooden spoon works well. Add gin and ice then shake together until the outside of the shaker is nice and chilled.
Double strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and garnish with strawberry and basil leaves.
This recipe is for one cocktail, but could be made in larger quantities for a party or BBQ!
