After discovering the delicious Queensland gin, Botanic Australis, I just had to see what this Queensland gin had to offer!
For those of you wondering what Lilly Pilly is, it’s a medium-sized tree native to Australia. Sometimes called Riberry, it produces tart and cranberry-like (apparently) berries that Tamborine Mountain Distillery have used to create their gin.
And it’s pink!
Initially, I wondered if the blush hue would mean a sweet and fruity gin, but that’s not the case at all. There is an initial floral flavour on first tasting, but the juniper and other botanicals including: elderflower, mistletoe, passionflower, and Shepherd’s purse (a member of the mustard family!) soon follow leaving a dry finish.
I wanted to use this gin for a dry martini (not least because on their website Tamborine Distillery recommends doing so) as I thought it would be both visually appealing and a good partner to vermouth.
Turns out the distillers were correct. Lilly Pilly gin makes a very fine martini indeed.
