Army and Navy Cocktail

Too often we stick to our favourite drinks recipes because the ingredients are to hand. I’d avoided tackling the Army and Navy cocktail because of the inclusion of tricky to say, and tricky find, Orgeat syrup.

Is or O-R-G-EE-AT or O-R-GEEAT? And what is it anyway?


Orgeat syrup is a delicious combination of almonds, sugar, orange flower water and rosewater. I considered trying to make it myself (for about one second) before coming across Crawley’s Bartender syrups and choosing the easier option. (If you can’t get hold of this you could try Monin Almond syrup, or Giffard’s)

The Army and Navy Cocktail first appeared in David A. Embury’s Fine Art of Mixing Drinks in 1948. Embury changed the proportions of the original recipe to this one, which has a higher gin ratio. The result is a delicious, subtle, dry gin cocktail that is very simple to make.

Ingredients for Army & Navy Cocktail

60ml London Dry Gin (I used No.3 gin)

15ml freshly squeezed lemon juice

8ml Orgeat syrup

dash of bitters

lemon twist to garnish


Add all the ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake vigorously until chilled. Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with a lemon twist.
