I had a little celebration last week. The third anniversary of my arrival in Australia. You’d expect a few champagne corks would be popping, except I’m not a massive fan of champagne, unless it’s an ingredient in a gin cocktail! Fortunately there is the French 75.
The French 75 cocktail is a heady mix of gin, simple syrup, lemon juice and champagne. Like all classic cocktails its creation and name is attributed to various sources. I quite like the version that says it’s named after a 75mm field gun used in World War I because it “hits the mark”, as it most certainly does!
The French 75 is an easy and impressive cocktail to make as you will see below. Some people suggest adding a sugar rim, but it’s really personal preference. Try serving it in a punch bowl for a party!
Ingredients for a French 75
45ml Sipsmith Gin
15ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
8ml simple syrup
Champagne, for topping up.
Method
Shake the gin, lemon juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker full of ice. Strain into a chilled glass and top up with chilled champagne!
Enjoy!
