Darren Rook, founder and distiller of Dodd’s Gin and Kew Organic Gin is one of the most creative distillers in the industry. Both gins required painstaking research and experimentation and are two of my most favourite gins.
When I visited London in June, I had the opportunity to attend the launch of two of Darren’s latest creations, Dodd’s Old Tom gin and Kew Explorer’s Strength gin.
Dodd’s Old Tom is a sweeter style gin that pre-dates London Dry. Darren has replaced the raspberry leaf and London honey of the original recipe and replaced them with fennel seed, lemon peel and licorice for sweetness.
Kew Organic is a difficult gin to beat, so I was excited about the Explorer’s Strength. It’s a bolder expression of the original and comes in at 57.3% ABV and instead of being created from four different distillates, like the original, it has been created using a one shot distillation method.
Both of these gins launched at Junipalooza Melbourne and were very well-received, but at the time were unavailable for purchase. I am delighted that Darren and the team have offered up a bottle of each to one lucky person for 12 Days of Gin-Mas!!
