The South Side Cocktail is one of my best friend’s favourite drinks. It’s a Savoy Cocktail book classic, although in Harry Craddock’s recipe a splash of soda water is added to create a longer drink. Allegedly, this was how the Southsiders in Chicago drank the cocktail during the prohibition era,and where the cocktail got its name.
Using fresh herbs in cocktails is fabulous. They add a fresh dimension that lifts the spirits (and the spirit!).
I’ve opted for the shorter version of the South Side, but you could add soda water if you prefer. Hayden at Bar Americano makes a beautiful South Side straight out of the Savoy Cocktail book. Definitely worth a visit!
Ingredients for the South Side Cocktail
8 fresh mint leaves (reserve one for garnish)
60ml London Dry Gin (I used McHenry’s Classic Dry Gin)
30ml freshly squeezed lime juice
15ml simple syrup
Method
Put the leaves in the bottom of an empty shaker, then the other ingredients. Add ice and shaker well until the shaker is chilled.
Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a fresh mint leaf.
Enjoy!
