The Reverse martini has a higher ratio of vermouth to gin creating what is also known as a “wet” martini.
As the drink is predominantly vermouth, you have to make sure it’s a good, fresh one. Very often people’s experience of a martini is diminished by using out of date, “off”, vermouth. It might be fortified, but it needs to go in the fridge and consumed within 3 months. Fortunately, the days of walking into a bar and seeing vermouth bottles lined up at the back are over and most venues worth their salt keep the vermouth where it belongs, in the fridge. If you do see the aforementioned arrangement, I suggest you select another cocktail instead.
So why, if you love gin, would you opt for a Reverse martini? Firstly, it’s a lower alcohol by volume cocktail than a dry martini, as vermouth is generally only about 20%. If you have a long evening of martini drinking ahead of you, it might be wise to start with this one. Secondly, it’s a delicious way to enjoy Navy Strength gins. You know I adore Navy Strength gins, but in a dry martini, they can be overpowering. By lowering the ratio of gin to vermouth, you create a very sippable well balanced martini which allows the delicate flavors of the gin and vermouth to come through.
Ingredients for a “Reverse” Martini
60ml dry vermouth (I used Dolin)
30ml gin (I used Sipsmith VJOP)
twist of lemon
Method
Stir all the ingredients over ice, Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Twist a lemon over the top to release the oils and then drop it straight into the drink.
Enjoy!
